BOOK DESCRIPTION / BLURB:
In 1982, two teenagers—serial killer survivor Emma Lewis and US Marshal candidate Travis Bell—are recruited by the FBI to interview convicted juvenile killers and provide insight and advice on cold cases. From the start, Emma and Travis develop a quick friendship, gaining information from juvenile murderers that even the FBI can’t crack. But when the team is called in to give advice on an active case—a serial killer who exclusively hunts teenagers—things begin to unravel. Working against the clock, they must turn to one of the country’s most notorious incarcerated murderers for help: teenage sociopath Simon Gutmunsson. Despite Travis’s objections, Emma becomes the conduit between Simon and the FBI team. But while Simon seems to be giving them the information they need to save lives, he’s an expert manipulator playing a very long game…and he has his sights set on Emma.
BOOK THOUGHTS:
It’s been months since I last read a psychological thriller, and I’ve had been meaning to read None Shall Sleep for quite a while too. I’m a bit late, but I’m delighted that I decided to pick this book up because I loved it!
I was reminded of The Silence of the Lambs and the show Mindhunter while reading this book. I loved Mindhunter and still hoping for Season 3. 😁 Now, going back.
Two teenagers— Emma Lewis, a serial killer survivor, and Travis Bell, a US Marshall candidate whose father got killed by a serial killer, were recruited by the FBI to interview convicted juvenile killers and provide insight on cold cases. Of course, in the hopes that these killers will be more cooperative with teenagers like them. Insights gained from those interviews will eventually help the FBI understand more the behavior of these serial killers. Doing so will also help solve active cases. These interviews will drag the two to an active case that involves a serial killer who exclusively targets teenagers. Here, Emma will agree to interview the notorious killer and teenage sociopath, Simon.
The story was so good that it instantly captured and lured me in.
I felt like I was there with the characters trying to catch the killer with them and with Emma during her chilling conversations with Simon.
I love the complexity of characters’ backstories, especially Emma and Simon. And how all the pieces are weaved together in the story.
Some of Emma’s encounter and conversation with Simon:
His beauty is like a lightning bolt: shocking and brilliant and terrifyingly wild. The radiance from the stained-glass windows gives him an almost ethereal glow. Emma reminds herself that he is not a magical being, he is a boy of flesh and blood.
He is a human boy, she reminds herself. A human boy, whose sister loves him. An isolated boy, who gets bored, and probably lonely. A smart boy who likes using big words.
Oh, Emma, you’re anything but boring. And I have a certain professionnal curiosity. None of my models survived their transformations—I didn’t get to talk with them afterward. But here you are…
If you’re into horrifyingly chilling psychological thrillers with killers and mystery killers that will make you cringe, and if you liked The Silence of the Lambs and the show, Mindhunter, then this book is for you.
